The glass-versus-plastic debate is not about which material is better; it is about which one protects your specific formula at the right cost through your specific channel. Both can be beautiful. The differences are barrier, weight, price and what happens at end of life.

Choose glass when the formula is fragile

Glass is chemically inert and lets no oxygen through the wall, so it is the default for retinol, vitamin C, AHAs and high-alcohol fragrance. If the product sells at a premium and ships short distances, the weight and breakage cost are acceptable and the glass actually supports the price perception. Frosted and coloured glass also add a tier of light protection for photosensitive actives.

Choose plastic when weight and freight decide

PET and PP dominate e-commerce and travel sizes because they survive parcel networks without protective inserts, weigh a fraction of glass and cut freight per unit. At higher volumes the unit price is well below glass. If sustainability is required, PCR at 30–70% keeps the plastic route credible, though the base colour shifts slightly with recycled content.

The cost and recycling trade-off

  • Glass costs more per unit and needs secondary protection in parcel shipping, raising total landed cost.
  • Plastic is lighter and cheaper but depends on local recycling streams to actually be recovered.
  • A mono-material plastic bottle recycles more reliably than a glass bottle with a mixed-material pump.

A practical way to decide

Ask three questions: does the formula need an inert, oxygen-tight wall? Does it ship long distances by parcel? Is the brand price positioned to absorb glass? If the first is yes and the others no, choose glass. If the first is no and the others yes, choose plastic — and tell us your PCR target so we match the resin and colour tolerance.
