Paper has no barrier of its own, so it works as the message layer of a cosmetic pack — the surface that carries the brand, the claims and the unboxing moment — wrapped around a glass or plastic primary. Done well, it is the most premium-feeling part of the pack.
Rigid box versus folding carton
| Type | Feel | Tooling | Typical MOQ |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rigid gift box | Luxury, sturdy | Cutting die + wrap | 1,000 pcs |
| Folding carton | Light, flat-packed | Cutting die | 1,000 pcs |
| Drawer / magnet box | High ritual | Die + magnet | 1,000 pcs |
The unboxing is the product
A rigid box sets a slower, more deliberate opening than a carton, which is why it carries serums, fragrance and gift sets. The ritual — a lift-off lid, a magnet close, a printed inner wall — is part of the perceived value. Design it for the shelf photo a customer will take, because that photo is free marketing.
Inserts that protect, not just fill
- EVA or moulded pulp cradles the bottle so it cannot shift in transit.
- A paper or PET window shows the product without breaking the seal.
- Folded board insert holds a leaflet and a card without bulking the box.
FSC board is the baseline, not a premium
FSC-certified board printed with soy or low-VOC inks is now the EU retail expectation, and it reads as considered rather than cheap. Because paper offers the largest printable area of any material, it is where the INCI list, the claims and the story all live. We will confirm the board grade, the wrap finish and the magnet pull force before sampling.
A practical note on cost
Rigid boxes cost more per unit than cartons because of the wrapped construction and the die, but the entry MOQ is realistic at 1,000 pieces since the tooling is a cutting die rather than an injection mould. Start from a standard box size and customise the wrap and insert to keep tooling at zero.
Send us the primary pack dimensions and the opening ritual you want and we will propose a box type, insert and FSC board with indicative cost.
